“I have come that they may have life And that they may have it more abundantly” John 10:10. (NKJV)
What have you found essential for physical renewal? Juicing kale, spinach and other veggies? Not Me! I find black coffee with a dash of cream gets me going.
What I do find essential, however, is making time for God to touch my life.
Why? Because when I don’t, instead of enjoying the abundant life Jesus promised, I get spiritually and emotionally dried up, detached, and discouraged.
I want to experience the abundant life of daily closeness to Christ. But it doesn’t happen automatically. It doesn’t simply descend on us. You and I have a part to play.
Here are five actions Scripture says are essential for personal renewal. Make these a regular part of your life and the Word promises you will move from dried up to filled up!
5 Essentials for Personal Renewal:
- Create Time for God’s Word
Of all the ways we can grow strong in Christ, taking time to read, think, pray, and (for me, at least), write out my responses, has made me spiritually and emotionally stronger than any amount of kale. (John 15:1-8).
- Cultivate Conversation with God
We can talk to God at any moment and in any circumstance. What are we losing when we’re too busy to pray? James 4:2 declares, “You do not have because you do not ask.” Pray to become more God-aware and speak to Him constantly about everything.
- Connect with a Spiritually Alive Community
Without being exposed to other Christians who live out their faith, it’s easy to drift. (Hebrews 2:1). We need to receive input that strengthens us. Seek out a situation where you are fed, challenged and encouraged. It’s essential!
- Choose Honesty with Yourself and God
Being emotionally healthy requires honesty. In Psalm 51:6, David acknowledged this truth. Pretending, denying, reframing facts, or blaming others only hinders our relationship with God, others, and even ourselves.
- Care for Yourself—Physically, Emotionally, and Intellectually
Our physical health, emotions, and minds are all gifts from God. How we handle them dramatically changes how we experience life. If you know you need help, ask God to show you where to go—then act.
