If anyone was a giant in the eyes of the Hebrew people it was Moses, their leader through the Exodus from Egypt and forty years of wilderness wanderings.
As Moses life came to an end and a new leader was needed for the Israelites, his assistant, Joshua, was tapped for the job. Joshua served at Moses’ side for years, but when the time came for the children of Israel to cross the Jordan River and enter the promised land, the massive weight of the mantle of leadership was placed on his shoulders.
Can you imagine the fear and anxiety the prospect of succeeding Moses could produce in Joshua? How could he fill the shoes of this great man?
When faced with this daunting task, Joshua received reassuring words from the LORD:
“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. . . Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed: for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:5-6 & 9)
In the midst of Joshua’s trepidation, the LORD reminded him he would possess the most powerful leadership resource in the universe: God’s presence.
Matthew 1:23 tells us something beautiful about Jesus: ”The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
When we face challenges that seem too big for us to bear, are led to go to places we’ve never been before, or are called to do jobs we feel ill-equipped to handle, we, too, can rest assured that, in Jesus Christ, God is with us. Since He is with us, we don’t have to be afraid.
Hear Him whisper, “Don’t be afraid…I am with you” into your circumstances today.
